Paola received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the SUNY College of Optometry in New York, USA in 2011. She has practised in various Optometry settings including nursing homes, private practices, and outpatient hospitals performing comprehensive eye exams to patients of all age groups. She was awarded the Dr. Louis Herrmann Memorial Award for Outstanding Compassion in Patient Care during her clinical rotations.
Her extensive training and practice includes the diagnosis and management of binocular and refractive conditions, vision therapy, strabismus, amblyopia, paediatric ocular diseases, Glaucoma, Diabetes and Retinal vascular diseases, hereditary retinal conditions, neuro-ophthalmology cases, and low vision. She has extensive training and practice in prescribing and managing contact lenses as well as ocular diseases with heavy emphasis in prescribing topical medications to lower intraocular pressure in early and advanced glaucoma, conjunctivitis, iritis, and herpes keratitis. Paola also took part in training fourth year students on their last rotation in New York.
Paola was heavily involved with New York public schools working alongside educational psychologists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists. She enjoys working with kids, diagnosing and treating vision disorders affecting school performance. She is very patient and kind, qualities that help when examining kids of all ages. Paola did several rotations at the paediatrics and vision therapy clinics at the University Eye Centre in New York, USA. During her rotation she gained a lot of experience in examining kids, diagnosing, and managing several vision disorders. She was offered her first job at her last rotation in White Plains, New York where she saw kids of all ages and helped run the vision therapy programme.
She has volunteered at the Special Olympics performing vision screenings for athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. She also volunteered at Diabetes Exposition performing diabetic eye screenings.
Paola was born in Colombia and relocated to New York at the age of fifteen where she completed her high school, college, and university studies. She relocated to Australia in 2016 and she completed the bridging qualifications to practice as an Optometrist in Australia and New Zealand. She also has an ocular therapeutic license in Australia and the USA. Paola has both licenses active and she is an active member of the American and Australian optometric association. She continues to take continuing education classes around the world as part of her requirements both in the USA and Australia.
Paola loves the outdoors and enjoys working out and staying healthy. She loves to swim as it reminds her of her competitive swimming career growing up in Colombia. She loves to travel and getting to know new countries, people, and cultures.
